Out In New Zealand: August 2010

I’m sure we all know when books are released over in the US (and UK) but what about here? There’s a little less talk of that here. So consider this new feature to be an extension of one of my goals with this blog: to promote YA fiction here in New Zealand, and to promote NZ YA to people in other parts of the world (as well as here).

So what’s out in New Zealand this August? If you have any suggestions for titles to include in upcoming months let me know. :)

No Time to Die: When Jenny plans to spend the summer undercover at the theatre camp where her sister was murdered she had no idea the drama would be quite so deadly. Still grieving and trying to cope with the loss of her sister, Liza, Jenny feels completely out of place on stage, unlike the rest of her theatrical family. But she is determined to understand why her sister was murdered, and more importantly, find out who killed her. So when Jenny thinks she hears Liza speaking to her, and suspects that someone might be following her, she is sure the truth will unfold…but, the drama that follows is even more twisted that she thought.

The Deep End of Fear: After her childhood best friend, Ashley, tragically drowns in an icy pond, Kate thought she was done with daring adventures for good. But now she has to return to her childhood home and it all comes flooding back. And the scary thing is, the neighbour that she’s tutoring claims he can see Ashley…and, that she’s been daring him to go on potentially fatal adventures. Can Kate face up to her childhood fears to stop history from repeating itself?

US vs UK: Enchanted Glass

Covers in New Zealand can be a little weird – sometimes we get the US covers, and sometimes we get the UK versions (and sometimes we get the Australian version, if there is a different one). Because of this I thought it would be to occasionally compare variations of covers from either side of the pond.

Since last week was Howl’s Moving Castle and related books, this week it’s another Diana Wynne Jones book. :)

US

UK

I prefer the UK one this week, as the focus is on the titular glass itself (and what you can see through it). It really should be seen enlarged though, for maximum impact.

Psychic…or psychotic?

Anna knows her family is crazy. But when she goes to visit her aunt and uncle for the summer and learns that her uncle’s charred body has been found, her life reaches a new level of insanity. Her erratic aunt’s “psychic” abilities are exaggerated by her grief, and have become borderline violent. Alone in an unfamiliar town, Anna struggles to pick up the pieces and establish any sense of normalcy. She desperately wants to trust Zack, the cute boy next door, but even he might know more about the incident than he is letting on.

But when Anna starts feeling an inexplicable pull to the site of her uncle’s murder, she begins to believe that her family’s supernatural gifts are real after all. Torn between loyalty and suspicion, Anna is certain of only one thing: she must discover who killed her uncle or she could be next….
